Visual Meditation and Health
Although the following is not meditation in the true sense of the word, visualization is required, and we demonstrate how it can be used to treat two specific health problems. Space precludes us from dealing with more ailments and how they may be treated, but if you try the ones discussed below, perhaps you may be tempted to look further into this area: it can be extremely rewarding.
Assume your usual meditation posture unless your malady prevents it, in which case, make yourself as comfortable as you can with the back as straight as you can get it and the head in perfect alignment. Concentrate on your breathing for a moment or two until it becomes settled and regular.
For painful joints, picture the affected area in your mind and visualize the blood vessels leading to and from it congested with dark red blood. Notice how taut the muscles are and how tangled the nerves. With this image firmly fixed, see a tide of pink, oxygen-full blood enriched with healing white cells flood through the veins and arteries. Observe how the muscles relax and your nerves untangle. Hold this image in your mind and then visualize the whole area again free from congestion, the muscles working smoothly, the nerves strands of polished wire. Let the image fade from view and, hopefully, the pain will have eased.
For bronchial problems, visualize your lungs clogged with dark yellow mucus. Now see the colour lighten, starting from the bottom of each lung until the mucous membranes are producing just enough mucus to keep the lungs properly lubricated and there is a ball of mucus being pushed up your throat and coughed out. You should be breathing much more easily at the end of this visualization.
Similar techniques, where the affected area is visualized first in its stricken state then as being cleansed before being seen in perfect working order, can be applied to a whole host of complaints. When all else fails, why not try them?
