Magnesia carbonica
Mag. carb.; magnesium carbonate Magnesium carbonate, which is a white, powdery substance, has a variety of industrial uses including the manufacture of bricks, cements, paper, paints and materials for insulation. In pharmaceutical manufacture it is used as a bulking material in some types of powder and tablets. The main source is magnesite, which is formed from altered limestones, dolomites or serpentines and is mined in China, the United States and Austria.
The homoeopathic remedy was investigated and proved by Hahnemann and is used to treat loss of the sense of taste when there is a thick, whitish coating on the tongue, indigestion and heartburn and digestive complaints with diarrhoea or constipation. The person may have a longing for fruity, acidic drinks and an unpleasant taste in the mouth. This is also a remedy for weakness and failure to thrive in babies where there is a lack of muscle tone.
Symptoms are made worse by touch, resting, at night and if conditions are windy. They improve for walking about and being out in fresh, clean air. People suitable for Mag. carb. are often dark-haired and pale-skinned and are prone to exhaustion with pains in the legs and feet. They are very sensitive to cold draughts and being touched and may be on edge and irritable. They are prone to having a sour, unpleasant taste in the mouth and are hypersensitive, being apt to feeling ignored and left out by others. They frequently have an intolerance such as sour smells, milk and sweat.
Magnesia phosphorica
Mag. phos.; phosphate of magnesia, magnesium phosphate
This white compound is one of the SCHUSSLER TISSUE SALTS (see GLOSSARY) and is prepared chemically from sodium phosphate and magnesium sulphate. Magnesium occurs naturally in the body and is essential for the correct functioning of nerves and muscles. A deficiency can cause cramping pains and spasms and have deleterious effects on the heart and skeletal muscles.
The remedy is used to treat neuralgic pains, writer's cramp, spasms and cramps. The pains are shooting and intermittent and may be brought on by a cold draught. Often, they occur mainly on the right side of the body. Colicky pains that are relieved by doubling over or by bending and by heat and firm pressure, benefit from Mag. phos. People who benefit from this remedy are often thin, sensitive and worried and may be academic, workaholic types. Symptoms are worse for cold air, touch, at night and if the person is tired and debilitated. They improve with any form of heat, pressure and warm surroundings.
Manganum aceticum
Acetate of manganese This remedy was investigated and proved by Hahnemann in the 19th century. It is useful for the treatment of general debility and weakness with loss of appetite and weight, anaemia and, possibly, ulcers of the skin or bed sores. The skin is a bluish colour, and the body is extremely sensitive to touch. The person has great difficulty in eating enough to maintain body weight.
Medorrhinum
A remedy prepared from gonorrhoeal discharge
Gonorrhoea, the sexually transmitted bacterial disease, has plagued humankind since ancient times, and was first given the name of gonorrhoea by Galen, a physician of the Roman civilization. The effects of gonorrhoea can be passed
from a mother to her baby during birth. Hahnemann believed that gonorrhoea was responsible for inherited traits or weaknesses in subsequent generations, and he called this a 'miasm', in this case the sycotic miasm (sycosis).
Two other miasms were identified, 'psora', connected with the blisters and itching of scabies (see PSORINUM), and syphilis (see SYPHILINUM). Gonorrhoea has always been a feared and devastating illness and was formerly treated with injections of silver nitrate. In conventional medicine it is treated with modern antibiotics.
The homoeopathic remedy is used to treat a variety of physical and mental symptoms. It is used to treat inflammation and infection of pelvic organs, menstrual pain and pain in the ovaries. Some other disorders of the mucous membranes, kidneys, nerves and spine, e.g. neuralgia, may benefit from this remedy. It is especially suitable for people who have a family history of gonorrhoea and some forms of heart disease.
Emotional disorders may be treated with Medorrhinum, especially mood swings with the person changing from irritability and extreme, impatience to passive withdrawal. In the impatient state the person is always in a hurry and is inclined to be selfish and insensitive. In the withdrawn state the person is dreamy and forgetful and very much in touch with, and moved by, the beauty of nature. In both states, the person tends to be forgetful and may feel neglected, lost or deserted.
Symptoms are made worse by damp weather, heat in the early morning between 3 and 4 a.m. and after passing urine. Even slight movements make the symptoms worse, but they improve with lying on the front, in the evening and being beside the sea. Symptoms are also better if the person rests on the hands and knees ('all fours').
Mercurius corrosivus
Merc, cor.; mercuric chloride, mercury chloride HgCl2
Mercuric chloride is a highly poisonous corrosive substance, causing burning and destruction of tissue if swallowed. It has antiseptic properties and is used to treat bulbs and tubers to prevent fungal attack. It is also used industrially in the manufacture of plastics. The homoeopathic remedy is used for severe symptoms of ulceration in the digestive and urinary tracts and mouth and throat.
It is used for ulcerative colitis with copious diarrhoea containing blood and mucus, and abdominal pains. Also, for severe bladder infections and urethritis with painful and frequent urination, the urine containing blood and mucus. There may be thick discoloured discharges containing pus. Throat and mouth symptoms include ulcerated tonsils covered with a white, pus-containing discharge, facial pain, exhaustion and secretion of excess saliva. Symptoms are worse in the evening and if the person walks about. They are also worse if the person eats fatty meals or acidic foods. Symptoms are better after breakfast and if the person rests.
Mercurius cyanatus
Mercuric cyanide This homoeopathic remedy is used to treat severe symptoms of diphtheria. The throat is extremely sore and the person finds swallowing and speech unbearable, and there is a covering of thick, greyish-white mucus. The person feels cold, and the skin has a blue-coloured tinge because of a lack of oxygen (cyanosis). The person may be on the verge of collapse.
Mercurius dulcis
Merc, dulc; mercurous chloride, calomel, mercury chloride Hg2Cl2 This substance has laxative properties, and calomel was used as a purgative in medieval times. It is now used in the horticultural and agricultural industries as a constituent of certain insecticides and fungicides. Both Mercurius dulcis and Mercurius corrosivus are found in mineral deposits in the United States of America, Mexico, Germany and parts of central Europe. Merc. dulc. is a useful remedy for children suffering from glue ear and catarrhal problems.
The child has swollen glands, and the nasal, ear and throat passages are clogged with discharges of thick, sticky mucus. Breathing may be noisy, and hearing is often affected. Symptoms are worse if the child is engaged in sport or physical exercise and also at night.
Mixed autumn moulds
MAP This homoeopathic remedy is derived from a mixture of three moulds-mucor, aspergillus and penicillum-and it is used to treat symptoms of hay fever that arise in the autumn. These symptoms include a runny nose and catarrh, itchy, red, watery eyes, sneezing and wheezing with a tight feeling in the chest. The usual time for symptoms to appear is in the early months of autumn, especially September.
Moschus moschiferus
Moschus; musk from the musk deer Musk is a strong-smelling, aromatic secretion produced by the male musk deer in order to attract a female. The secretion has long been used in the production of perfume and has a long-lived effect. Samuel Hahnemann was concerned about the widespread use of musk-based scents, believing that the substance made people more susceptible to disease by weakening their natural immunity.
The musk deer is a small deer found in countries of central Asia, inhabiting hilly or mountainous areas. Dried musk is used to prepare the homoeopathic remedy, which is mainly given for hysterical, neurotic and emotional symptoms. Physical symptoms include giddiness and fainting, pallor and exhaustion and sweating. People suitable for this remedy have a tendency towards hypochondria and may feel that everyone is against them.
They tend to talk incessantly and have hurried, clumsy movements. They tend to feel chilled, although one half of the body may seem cold and the other hot. Their exhaustion is worse for resting than for moving about, and all symptoms are aggravated by cool, fresh air and emotional upset or excitement. Symptoms improve after burping and for warm surroundings.
Murex
Purple mollusc This homoeopathic remedy is prepared from the body of the shellfish and is useful for menopausal symptoms of irregular bleeding. It is also used to treat emotional and hysterical symptoms and stress. A person suitable for this remedy dislikes being touched and especially having a medical examination.
Mygale lasiodora
Mygale las.; Mygale avicularia, Aranea avicularia, Cuban spider This spider, which is a large variety native to Cuba, has a highly poisonous bite used to immobilize its prey. If a person is bitten, the area becomes inflamed and discoloured, turning purple and green, and the effects spread outwards as the poison drains along the lymph vessels. The person experiences a high fever, tremor, chills, dry skin and mouth, severe anxiety and breathing difficulties and is very thirsty. The person fears that he or she will die.
The homoeopathic remedy is used to treat involuntary twitching and jerking of the muscles, which may be caused by nerve disorders such as various forms of chorea. The remedy is sometimes used to treat sexually transmitted venereal diseases. Symptoms are worse during the morning but improve when the person is sleeping.
