More About Spiritual Healing Therapies

This transfer of energy may sound like a form of magic, but no genuine spiritual healer would ever claim to possess special, mystical powers. All honest healers acknowledge that they themselves neither create nor possess healing power or energy but merely act as channels for a higher power. Their talent is not the gift of healing but the gift of being able to tap into universal healing energy.

Most spiritual healers who practise contact healing also practise absent or distant healing. As the name suggests, the healing is performed in the patient's absence, sometimes even without their knowledge. The principles of harnessing the healing forces and channelling them to the patient remain the same, however. In this case the positive energy is transmitted in the form of a healing message.

The healer sends out healing vibrations while clearly visualizing the recipient in perfect health, perhaps bathed in ethereal light. Sometimes the name of the sufferer is spoken out loud, creating a telepathic link along which the energy can travel. The nature of the illness to be cured, however, should not be uttered or even thought about, because this will add potency to the illness in the mind and make it grow stronger.

Absent healing is obviously particularly suitable for patients living far away, but also for children, animals, the mentally deranged, the chronically ill and those who are unconscious in a coma. Absent healing can be highly beneficial for anyone who is incapable of taking an active part in his or her own healing. It does not matter that the recipient may not be actively receptive to the healing vibrations-as long as he or she is not sending out negative counter-healing messages there will still be benefit.

Radionics is a slightly more dubious form of distant healing, involving specially designed instruments. A 'black box' is employed that can pick up the electromagnetic radiations emitted by all living things. The instrument can be used as a diagnostic tool by tuning into 'diseased' wavelengths and translating them into electrical frequencies, determining an individual's mental, physical and emotional state.

By transmitting vibrationally suitable wavelengths, the unsatisfactory condition can be cured. This all sounds very technical, drawing from the laws of physics, but in fact the practice of radionics is highly unscientific and relies largely on the intuition and sensitivity of the practitioner. There is, in fact, no scientific evidence of the effectiveness of radionics nor any logical reason why it should work.

Now that you know a little about the basic ways in which spiritual healers operate, and the techniques they employ, we should focus on how to find a suitable healer.

Finding the name and address of a spiritual healer in your area is relatively easy, as the NFSH provides lists, but finding a healer who works for you, and with whom you feel comfortable, may be a different matter. Basically it is a question of using your intuition and listening to your instincts.

Healing is a two-way process, and it is important that a mutual bond is established between healer and patient, allowing the free passage of healing energy from one to the other. The patient must therefore feel fully at ease with the chosen healer and be able to relax and express himself or herself freely in the healer's presence.

Spend a bit of time chatting to the healer before you commit yourself to undergoing a session of treatment. If you feel at all uncomfortable with him or her, do not be afraid to suggest that perhaps he or she is not the right practitioner for you and leave.

Do not accept treatment from a healer who appears tired or weak; he or she obviously does not know how to harness the healing life force properly and may even drain you of whatever vital energy you have. Also, be on the lookout for anything that seems vaguely self-serving in the healer's character, behaviour or manner, such as traces of ego or lust.

The role of the healer as lover is discussed in Roles of the healer, but in this situation, dishonourable intentions on either side could become a serious obstacle to effective healing. Genuine healers offer their services out of a sincere wish to use what powers they have to help people in suffering, not for the rewards, either emotional or material, that this may bring.

While on this subject, the question of whether spiritual healers should charge for their services remains a contentious issue. There are those who believe that it is wrong to make money out of desperate, suffering people, but anyone wishing to concentrate on exercising their healing abilities on a full-time basis obviously requires some kind of income. Most healers compromise by asking for donations, and those who charge a fee can usually be negotiated with if there is a real need.

To give you some idea of the different kinds of healing experience that are possible, here are four people's personal stories of spiritual healing. Each illustrates something different that can be achieved through healing while expressing something universal about the nature of the human condition and the healing phenomenon.
